Grade 4 Chinese Facts

Using Padlet, an internet application for sharing ideas, questions and notes, the students created a “wall” of facts about China.  This is a fabulous tool for classroom collaboration and for very quickly creating a page of facts about China!

Click on each fact to view it and then click on the X on the top right to get back to the wall.

Grade 5 Music Project with Mrs. Renauld

This fifth grade music project involved choosing a Shel Silverstein poem, one rich with visual and aural images. Students recorded their narrations into the Garageband program, then explored and strategized to include music and sound ideas to enhance the poem’s mood and imagery in compelling ways. They created a “score” or cue sheet to plan and document their piece of work. This lesson incorporated performing, improvising, composing, arranging, notating, listening, analyzing and describing music, as well as understanding music in relation to language and culture. Many, many thanks to Karin Gravina for her help along the way! –Heidi Renauld

Text is Powerful Day – Grade 5

Yesterday was TEXT IS POWERFUL DAY at LES!

Each fifth grade student installed their own powerful text in school, in order to give a positive experience to others in our community. This was the culmination of a project that started with brainstorming powerful words, deciding what media to use, and writing letters to adults to request permission to install art in specific places. Last week students made a mock-up of their installation, and this week they gathered materials and made them. The results were uplifting. There were banners throughout our school created with pastels, duct tape, collage, pencils, buttons, and more. The art installations were meant to make individuals STOP, THINK, AND FEEL SOMETHING POSITIVE!
Below are the text installations and the student who created them.

Field Day Flashmob!

Yesterday at Field Day we had great weather, fun games and happy students and staff! The staff, by a slim margin, won the annual Staff vs Grade 6 volleyball game and Grade 5 won the tug of war. As everyone was getting ready to eat, the students in Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 surprised everyone with a flashmob dancing to Usher’s More. A fabulous day at LES!

Ms. Bull’s Grade 6 Shel Silverstein Poems with Mrs. Renauld

This sixth grade audio-visual music project began with students choosing a Shel Silverstein poem, one rich with visual and aural images. Students recorded their narrations into the Garageband program, then explored both Soundbible.com and the Garageband library to include music and sound ideas to enhance the poem’s mood and imagery. Students then created a video in iMovie, selecting appropriate visual images and incorporating their audio portion as the soundtrack. This lesson incorporated performing, improvising, composing, arranging, notating, listening, analyzing and describing music, as well as understanding music in relation to language and culture.

My thanks to Karin Gravina for her all her wisdom, help and patience during this project!
