Grade 3 Science Inquiry – Build a Skyscraper

Tracey Supple created a challenge for her third grade students. They needed to engineer and build a skyscraper at least 18 inches tall that could withstand wind. Their only materials were paper, tape, and craft sticks. They spent the first two days experimenting with the craft sticks until they realized that they wouldn’t be able to get the height they needed without the use of the paper. Once two students figured out how to make tubes with the paper, students began working on making their designs sturdy. To test the finished skyscraper, they needed to put a tennis ball on top, put it in front of a fan, and wait 10 seconds to see if their skyscraper could withstand the wind. Below are some videos of the students explaining the process, results, and finished products.
