Grade 5’s Mesoamerica Timeline

As part of their Grade 5 social studies curriculum, students learn about the highly organized civilizations that already existed in the Americas before Columbus: Aztecs (Mexico), Mayan (Central America) and the Incas (Peru). Each student selected an artifact from one of the cultures and wrote a story about that culture based on the artifact. The artifacts were then added to a timeline to show the progression of the civilizations. Moving into the History of World Exploration (Vikings to Captain Cook), the class will continue to add to this timeline.

Kindergarten – All About Our Families

As part of their curriculum, Kindergarteners learn about families. They compare their own with others, name similarities and differences, identify their own place in their family, know their last name, address and phone number, and locate on a map where their relatives live.

Using KidPix each student created a picture of his/her home, favorite family foods, and fun family vacations. The images were added to iMovie, each student was recorded reading their information and a movie was created! Always a fun project to do.

Preschool

Preschool children listened to a collection of children’s songs from around the world. They heard each song recorded in both its native language and in English. They then learned the songs in English. On their globe, the class found the country from which the song originated. Children looked at the song book, heard the songs at the Listening Center, and sang along with the recordings.

One of the children’s favorite songs (from Mexico) begins like this, “Pin Pon’s a paper doll, and his clothes are all in place . . .”

Here are the lyrics:

In Spanish
Pimpón es un muñeco
muy grande de cartón
se lava la carita
con agua y con jabón
se desenreda el pelo
con peine de marfil
y cuando dé estirones
no llora ni hace así ñañaña
pimpón dame la mano
con un fuete apretón
que quiero ser tu amigo
pimpón pimpón pimpón

English Translation:

Pingpong is a very
Large cardboard doll.
He washes his face
with soap and water,
He combs his hair
with an ivory comb
and when it yanks,
He doesn’t cry or go wah wah wah!
Pingpong, give me your hand
with a strong grip,
I want to be your friend
Pingpong, Pingpong, Pingpong.

The children made these multi-cultural paper dolls in response to this song. Absolutely too precious not to share!
