Grade 6 – Shel Silverstein

This audio-visual music project began with Heidi Renauld’s sixth grade students choosing a Shel Silverstein poem, one rich with visual and aural images. Students recorded their narrations into the Garageband program, then explored both Soundbible.com and the Garageband library to include music and sound ideas to enhance the poem’s mood and imagery. Students then created a video in iMovie, selecting appropriate visual images and incorporating their audio portion as the soundtrack. This lesson incorporated performing, improvising, composing, arranging, notating, listening, analyzing and describing music, as well as understanding music in relation to language and culture.

Grade 5 Shel Silverstein Poems

This audio-visual music project began with Heidi Renauld’s fifth grade students choosing a Shel Silverstein poem. Students recorded their narrations into the Garageband program, then explored and strategized to include music and sound ideas to enhance the poem’s mood and imagery in compelling ways. They created a “score” or cue sheet to plan and document their piece of work. This lesson incorporated performing, improvising, composing, arranging, notating, listening, analyzing and describing music, as well as understanding music in relation to language and culture.

Grade 5 Continents Websites

As part of their fifth grade curriculum, the students learn about the world’s continents – location, size, people, natural and man-made landforms, climate, countries, famous places, and natural resources. Mr. Stewart’s students were challenged by “Information Design Systems” (IDS) to work in teams to research and create a website for upper elementary students on a specific continent. As part of the design work, the students developed a continent template in which future classes would continue to research the specific continent and extend their research into countries within each continent.

Students were responsible for researching and presenting their information in a format that was visually striking, attention grabbing, age-appropriate (grades 4-6), factually accurate and easy to navigate. Each group was expected to create a home page, map page, people page, landforms page, and resources/climate page. They also created a countries page which future students will use to continue the research.

Kindergarten’s “Best Dessert Ever!”

Kindergarten presented in the cafeteria their persuasive writing pieces on “The Best Dessert Ever!” All the classes were invited to stop by to listen to their writing pieces and sample their desserts! The best kind of writing celebration! Click on image to view it.

Grade 2 Math and Science Symposium

The students in Lisa Kuerzel’s second grade class held a math and science symposium. Students presented research findings from their science experiments, showed their lab reports, and demonstrated their experiments. They also presented lessons on a math skill they learned this year. A great job by all! Click on each image to view it.

Grade 3 Memories

In one of the last computer lab sessions of the school year, Tracey Supple’s class created short quicktime movies of their favorite part of third grade. The KidPix software program has a new feature for designing 3D movies. We are still learning how to best create and export them! Voices are still a challenge and also the timing of the voices but it’s a lot of fun to learn! Enjoy!

Grade 3 Author Celebration

Tracey Supple’s Grade 3 class celebrated their opinion and information writing with a publication celebration. The opinion pieces focused on a change that was needed in our school or our community or a noteworthy person that needed to be appreciated. Students were both proud and excited to share their great writing with parents and friends!

Grade 1 Authors

The students in Alissa Alteri Shea enjoyed an Author’s Celebration with family and friends. Students read an excerpt from one of their favorite writing pieces. The first graders have become very talented writers!
