Kindergarten Families

In Margot Hambleton’s Kindergarten class, the students have been studying about families: comparing their own family with others, identifying their place in the family, naming similarities and differences, and talking about what makes their families special.  They created pictures in KidPix describing what their families do together, who they are like and how they wake up each morning.  The students were then recorded talking about their special memories.

Grade 1 All About Bears

As part of their science curriculum, Alissa Alteri Shea’s First Grade class studied different types of bears. They learned about their habitats, body features, seasonal changes in appearance, reproduction cycle and what they eat. Grouped into bear teams, the students illustrated their bear facts using KidPix. They were imported into iMovie and the student voices were recorded reading their bear facts. The result is a great presentation on all that they learned.

Grade 3 Monster Project

Students in Tracey’s Grade 3 created a monster using KidPix, wrote a detailed description of their creation and typed it into Pages. The description was then given to another student who had to re-create the monster using only the detailed description. This fun project challenges students to carefully write detailed descriptions of their monsters. Color, shape, size, and position are important details along with appropriate adjectives.

Grade 6 Third Grade Picture Book Project

As part of their science curriculum, students in Ms. Alyson Bull’s and Mr. Bill Stewart’s classroom were presented a design challenge in November. Working in teams, the students needed to create interesting and engaging picture books appropriate for Grades 3 and up on earth science topics exploring the atmosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere. Students needed to create high quality, informative, non-fiction picture books about the planet Earth to meet the new 2012 Common Core Standards for Teaching and Learning. As a further challenge, the illustrations, graphics and photographs had to be original. To be successful the teams, needed to collaborate and fairly divide the tasks involved in designing their picture book. Lastly, the team had to be prepared to “pitch” their non-fiction picture book to an editing team of experts in the field by the February 1, 2013 deadline. Their beautiful completed works are below. Tremendous amount of work but the students worked together and produced high quality publications. A project that clearly prepares students for the 21st Century Student Outcomes: Learning and Innovation Skills, Information, Media and Technology Skills, and Life and Career Skills.

Grade 5 Endangered Species – Interviews and Picture Books

The students in Ms. Paglia Baker’s classroom have been researching endangered species.  As a culminating project, the students created picture books about their animal and included facts about their habitat, physical descriptions, reasons for endangerment and potential solutions.  To reach a wider audience, the students were grouped by biome and interviewed about their animals.  In these TED-like talks, the students fully demonstrate  knowledge of their species.  Below are the interviews.  Under each student’s picture is a link to their picture books.  All did a fabulous job!  Congratulations!
