Book Character Day 2018

Grade 4 Inventors

Katrin Griswold’s fourth grade students have been learning about inventors and inventions. Today was the annual invention fair and once again the fourth grade students created some pretty awesome inventions! Talented students!

Grade 6 Cereal Box Commercials

For their book contract, Alyson Bull had her students design cereal boxes to advertise the books they had read in their independent reading. They also gathered 3 collectible charms to represent the protagonist, conflict, and theme from the book. They presented their work in the form of a promotional TV advertisement that advertised both the cereal and the book. Their completed projects are shown below.

Grade 1 Newspaper

The students in Alissa Alteri Shea’s classroom have been working on opinion writing. Click on the image below to read some of their awesome reviews. They may convince you to purchase a new toy or visit a new restaurant!

Grade 1 Bridge Builders

As part of their computer lab class, students in Alissa Alteri Shea’s first grade classroom have been working on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities. Working collaboratively with partners, students are given an open-ended activity in which they go through the process of defining a problem, brainstorming possible solutions, planning, creating, and then improving on their plan. Recently the first graders have been given a set of challenges based on basic bridge structures. They had to use their problem solving skills to create beam, arch, and suspension bridges. The energy in the classroom during the challenges is incredible!

Grade 4 – Regions Project

Students in Katrin Griswold’s fourth grade class have been learning about the U.S. regions. The class was divided into regional teams and each team researched the following areas: state names/capitals, climate, natural resources, physical features, historic sites, and Native American tribes. Using Padlet, an online collaboration tool, each group created a presentation about their region.

Grade 2 – All About Landforms

Students in Nikki Harper’s second grade studied landforms and how they have shaped the earth. Students worked in groups researching one of the four landforms: deserts, coasts, volcanoes, and mountains. The students needed to define the landform, describe the characteristics, and find examples of the landform. Using the app ChatterPix, each student described one aspect of the landform.

Grade 1 – All About Bears

As part of their first grade unit, Alissa Alteri Shea’s students studied black bears, polar bears, panda bears and brown bears learning about their features, habitats, and eating habits. Students were divided into groups to become experts on one bear. A particular focus this year was on adaptations for survival. Each group then decided which “superpowers” their bear had in order to adapt for survival and we created a fun movie about adaptations. The students then presented their research to family members, guests and students. Excellent job, Grade 1!
